Service Description

Sewing class for kids grades 2-5, no patterns, no worksheets — real, hands-on making from day one. Every Fall session at Whidbey Coffee's community room in Burlington, your student grabs a machine, picks a project, and starts creating. No pre-cut kits, no paint-by-numbers pattern packets — just thought, experimentation, and the confidence to figure it out as they go, the same way real designers work. Here's what a season looks like: Kids start with the basics that build fast wins — drawstring bags and simple pouches, learning their very first stitches, how to thread a machine, and how to sew a clean seam. From there, they level up to tote bags and zipper pouches, adding straps, boxed corners, and their first real zipper install. By the middle of the season, most kids are ready for a signature project — a stuffed animal or plushie, complete with curved seams, stuffing, and hand-finishing details. It's always a favorite, and it's the one they carry home and never let go of. For kids ready to go further, we introduce garment basics: simple elastic-waist shorts or tops, where they design their own fit and build a real piece of clothing from scratch. Every project is different, every week is hands-on, and every student leaves with something they made entirely themselves. What's included: a sewing machine for every student (bring your own if you'd rather use it), plus all fabric, thread, and notions for every project. No patterns required — we teach kids to measure, cut, problem-solve, and finish a project start to finish, building real skills instead of just following instructions. Taught by Stephanie Philbrick, founder of Positively Sewing — a self-taught designer who's sewn 100+ pieces across 10 collections and shown in 17 fashion shows before bringing her love of sewing home to teach kids in her own community. And because we care about the planet as much as we care about our students, every skill your child builds is one more reason to make and mend instead of buy and toss — keeping fabric, machines, and supplies out of landfills, one project at a time. Grades 2-5. Community Room at Whidbey Coffee, Burlington. Sign up today and watch your student turn curiosity into confidence, one stitch at a time. If this time does not work for you, Grades 2-5 have another option on Monday evenings as well.
